The first red letter Bible was published in 1901.
The red letters are Jesus words, where He's being quoted.
Hence the reason there are no red letters in the Old Testament, since He wasn't born until the New Testament. (This is when the accounts of his life started.)
Red evokes the color of blood, and therefore is the color of martyrs and of Christ's death on the Cross.
I'm grateful for this writer, he put together links of all the red letter sections of the Bible!
